Top 3 moving mistakes – and how to avoid them
Thinking that you can DIY a big move
For most of us, the days of dealing with minimal belongings and cheap, easily replaceable furniture are over. Moving is a complicated process that involves significant logistical planning and quite a few strong helpers. While forgoing a professional moving company might seem cheaper up-front, unexpected costs and unnecessary stress might not be worth it to you. What happens if you damage a valuable belonging? Or your back gets hurt lifting a hefty item? Safe yourself the hassle and hire a moving company that can take care of every aspect of your move.
Waiting until the last minute
It generally takes about a week to completely pack up a home, but that certainly doesn’t mean you should wait that long. The earlier you start prepping for your move, the less stressful it will be. Take into consideration the time you’ll need to organize, clean, get supplies, and decide what to donate or discard. A few weeks before your move, you should also dig through your pantry, refrigerator and freezer to start using up food you won’t want to move or waste. Although everyone’s timeline is different, we recommend starting the process at least a month and a half in advance of your move date.
Forgetting to tell your moving company about valuables
Movers have specific guidelines when it comes to valuable objects – think artwork, wine collections, fine china, etc. Make sure you point these items out to your mover during the walkthrough. You will most likely have to fill out a High Value Inventory Form, which ensures that the items are properly accounted for and are delivered in good condition.
