Your Holiday Moving Guide

When you daydream about the holidays, you probably think about the pleasant time spent with family and friends. You know things might get a little chaotic, but it’s a chaos you look forward to in a way. However, no one really looks forward to the chaos that comes with a move, especially a move during the holidays. It can throw a nasty monkey wrench into your holiday bliss. It is never ideal to move during the holidays, however, sometimes life makes it so you do not really have a choice. Thus, in case you do find yourself forced to move during the holidays, we have listed a few tips that may help so you can still have a pleasant move and nice holidays.

  1. Always Check it Twice

Get your forms in your binder, along with all necessary paperwork and information. It’s important to make sure you have all critical documents when making the transition to your new home. For example, with kids, it’s vital to make sure you have all outgoing and incoming school documents when switching during the middle of the year.

  1. Manage your Schedule

If you have family or friends that typically visit you during the holidays, make them aware of your move ASAP. Consider your other family members and friends that may need to know what is happening during this time and let them know too. Also consider the departure and arrival locations and dates; along with any events going on that may impede or delay your move in any way. Make the appropriate scheduling adjustments as necessary.

  1. Invest in Easy Decorations

You want it to look and feel like the holidays even if you’re busy moving. It’s important to keep those spirits high. After all the holidays are a time to be thankful and happy for all the wonderful things going on in your life. You may not be able to go all out on lights and festive décor like you usually do, so go get some decorations that are easy to assemble and take down. If possible, even have someone head to your new home and get decorations set up.

  1. Start packing early

Begin a few weeks before your closing date and start by choosing a location to keep all of your boxes. A garage can be a perfect location. Then go room-by-room taking all the things that won’t be moving with you. Moving can be a great opportunity to de-clutter. Then go room by room again and pack up all the non-essentials. Process

  1. Don’t let the Stress of Moving Dampen Your Holiday Spirit

Even if you are disappointed in the timing of your move, don’t let it take the holiday spirit out of you! Play holiday music while packing, do your best to create a festive atmosphere (opening boxes does not count as presents). If you have children make sure you let them know that Santa will find them in your new home. If don’t have time to cook, look around for a restaurant or inn that is holding festive holiday dinners. The ambiance can lift your spirits and even may make you feel a little spoiled. And remember, you’re getting a great new gift for the holidays – a new home!
